As for the theory, I'm not so sure... chi is generated in the chakras, not the soul, psi is generated by the mind (though the process could very well be a clashing of yin and yang, which would be supported by the neutrality of psi and chi). And anyway, many people use external energies instead of internal energies, which couldn't be produced internally if it's the same for everyone.
