Chapter 2
I heard a rough, quiet voice from the edge of the alley, as I began to turn the corner. “It’s about time you got here,” said Sam.
I offered a quick smile. “I was just doing a few push-ups. Not like I need them to kick your-“
“You should be prepared to put your money where your mouth is, or watch where you step.”
The tone in Sam’s voice told me I was on thin ice, but I continued anyways, “Just to be fair,” I grinned, “I’ll give you the first punch.”
“You better hope you don’t regret those words.” Sam charged me, ready to cause some damage. I quickly shot to the side, charged the energy in my arm, and raced forward. This punch landed smack dab in the middle of Sam’s chest, sending him back several feet.
“C’mon, my left pinkie toe has more power than that!”
“Be grateful I took it easy,” I replied
He made another attempt to assault me, but was much more tactful this time. A flying kick flew at me, and hit me in the jawbone. That was going to hurt in the morning. The stars that replaced my vision quickly faded, and I was soon looking at the empty space where Sam had been.
“Up here,” Sam called.
I turned and jumped up, climbing window ledge after window ledge until I was facing Sam again. “Next time, I’ll be sure to put up some more resistance. I figured I would let you feel a bit of pride before I mopped the street with you.”
“Psshhhh, that’s what you say every time,” Sam’s hand began to slide into his pocket. “That is, every time I beat you.” Sam’s hand whipped out of his pocket, sending a small knife in my direction. The knife was nothing more than a toothpick compared to Sam’s other options, but I soon found my arm hairs sliced in half and my forearm had a small cut.
At the first sight of my own drop of blood, I forgot this was a training session. Sam had hurt me, so he was the enemy. I had to eliminate the enemy. A rage like blazing fire swelled up within me, burning away all rational thoughts. I burst toward Sam, aiming a flurry of punches at him. The look on his face told me I had caught him by surprise, but that didn’t stop him from protecting himself.
Sam deflected each fist like feathers in a fan. “Oh, so now Nicole has her big kid diapers on?”
I continued to attack him, each fist blurring with speed. One of my fists hit Sam, and I felt a gust of wind glide past my arm, throwing Sam 30 feet away.
“What was that?” Sam yelled.
My rage disappeared, and I suddenly felt like curling into a ball on the ground and sleeping until year 4000.”I don’t know. You hurt me and I flipped out. That’s all I know.”
“I know that Captain Obvious. What I’m talking about is when I landed 30 feet away. You may be strong, but that wasn’t strength. I felt a gust.” Sam began pacing.
“Well, the most I know is basic energy manipulation, and that wasn’t it.”
“Don’t let the Trolls catch you doing that, or you’ll be Eliminated.”
“What’re you young men doing out this early in the morning? Or should I say criminals?” This Patroller fit the name “Troll” perfectly, with an enormous nose and crooked teeth to add to the effect.
“Just got into a fight about whether or not a plastic surgeon or an orthodontist would be the better career choice, though you look like you could use both,” Sam casually replied.
“I think you should watch where you step or you might step into a cell.” The intimidating tone in the Troll’s voice didn’t seem to affect Sam at all.
“You might want to watch where you step, or you might step into my fist, of course, that would only improve your looks.”
“Down to the station with you two,” the Troll said, as he pulled out a Locker. “One hit with this, and you’ll be paralyzed from the neck down. And don’t try anything funny because I’m not afraid to send you into next week with this.”
“Good luck getting us do-,”
“Just shut your face and do it, Sam,” I said. We would go down there, and they would find no charges against us. I would go home, hop back into bed, and try to get some sleep.
“Listen to your friend or it will only make it harder.” The Patroller grabbed Sam and I and threw us in the hovercar.
