Shade's Thoughts on "heroes" Warning: Graphic, not for the weak-hearted
Some thoughts about 'heroes' 'bravery', and related
subjects:
I have noticed a naive thought circling this site as of
late. People develop their psionic powers, then
suddenly say 'I am going to be a hero, fighting evil,
saving lives, blah blah blah'
Well, not to be a pessimist, but that is not, in all
likelyhood, going to happen, because, to be brutally
honest, most of us simply do not have th gonads to
practice what we preach. You might say you would
give your life for someone, but when the guillotine
is rolled out, would you step up and say, 'Take me'?
My purpose in writing this is to give the people here a
partial image of what you are getting yourself into.
What the public image of a hero is, is familiar to all of
us: the mighty strong unbeatable warrior in costume,
keeping us safe from the forces of evil.
The public image of a hero is also 100% INcorrect.
Are we really so naive as to think that heroes are
unbeatable? Do we even know what a hero, a real one,
truly is?
A hero, is someone who is selfless, not only one who
would give himself for those who acknowledge him, but
also for those who do not, even for those who deny that
he is noble, who insult and revile him.
I am sure that we have all dreamed of being a hero
someday. Sweep in, save the day, sweep out, all that
crap. That is exactly what it is-crap. Speaking as
someone who has risked his life for others on multiple
occasions, and met who I consider a REAL hero, I will
say that it is not that easy. Do you think Jesus Christ
did not have second thoughts about his crucifixion?
Do you think that firemen are not terrified of rushing
into a burning house?
Many people that have never actually risked their life
have a grossly distorted image of bravery. They think
that bravery is being unafraid. No. Bravery is being
afraid, but doing what you do, in spite of fear, ignoring
it, pressing on anyway.
Many people think that it takes 'a special kind of
person' to be a hero. No, it does not. Anyone can be a
hero. Does that surprise you? It most likely does.
But, before you go rushing off, let me tell you about
the side effects:
Are you really ready to become truly selfless? Do you
honestly think that you could give your life, your
most precious possession, for someone that you do not
even know? Even more, someone who hates you?
Are you ready to accept the possibility of death?
No matter how strong you are, eventually the odds are
going to beat you, and you will die. It is inevitable.
If you continually risk your life, day after day, then
you are going to die sooner or later.
From a more immediate standpoint, have you
considered what makes a hero who he/she is? You
think that psionics is all it takes. Bullshit! You are
WRONG. It takes a hell of a lot more than just psionics.
You think psionics can replace everything else?
Think again.
Another factor to be considered:
In most cases (my experience), acts of heroism are not
well received by the general public. You save someone's
life, and you are likely to end up with a lawsuit. That is
how pathetic this world has become. The time when
acts of gallantry were heralded by all is long gone. You
will be persecuted?
The final point I bring to your attention is this:
Are you strong enough to face the death of others?
Do not hurriedly answer yes.
Someone brought up the point that humans die every
day. That is true, but have you watched it happen?
Have you watched someone dear to you thrown up against a
wall, and their face smashed in with a cinder block?
Have you felt the thuds in the earth as that same block
is used to smash that same child's ribcage-felt the
cracking of bones-a sound that will forever haunt your
dreams? Have you heard the laughs of the sociopaths
that did this deed as they run off, soon to forget what
they have done? Have you knelt by your best friend,
and screamed your anger and sadness to the sky in an
earsplitting yell that shakes the ground itself? Have
you felt hate well up in you, so strong it blocks out
all other urges, and replaces them with the savage urge
to destroy the ones who killed the one you loved, to rip
them apart and burn the pieces?
Are you still haunted by memories of eight years ago?
I think that many, even adults, have not come to grips
with how disturbing a violent death truly is, especially
when you are forced to watch, and can do nothing
to stop it. The incident above was my first and best
friend. I have not slept soundly in eight years, because
of the nightmares that will never stop following me.
Nor do I think thatI shall ever stop searching for the
ones who caused this to happen. I firmly believe that
I will not get peace until they are dead, and all who are
like them have followed the same path, the one that
leads to death.
Beware of violence, for you do not know the effects it
will have until it is too late. Many think that they can
become a hero, you might be one of them. My advice-
give it up. Seriously, I am no hero, I have looked at it
and turned away, for the reason that I am a filthy
being, distorted by hate and bent by urges no one can
ever understand. I will never be a hero, and nor, I
think, will you.
If I sound angry, hateful, afraid even, it is because I am.
Many people, especially those age 13-16, truly have no
idea what happens to people that try to be heroes. The
world is not a nice place-it is a terrible, evil place full
of horrors. If you try to stanch this flow of vileness, it
will swallow you whole-consume you.
So abandon your dreams of becoming a hero, because it
is not what you think, it truly is not. They are a breed
born of hatred, not love.

yes, jesus did have second thoughts. tats y he prayed on the mountain
true heros don't try to be heros they just do what is neccisary to protect others and i would give my life, after all my life is worthless to me if i let others die instead
A true hero will give his life up.... So that he will die with the thought that he did his best. A hero would rather die then live. A hero know's that it's not over but the beginning after his death. A hero has seen the horrow's of evil felt it's pain tasted it's blood and died in it's hate. A true hero has only one concious and no emotion. One determination and no thought. A true hero would still smile at his very last breath.
I would die for the right person and i may be a fool though only the powerful and pure can be heroes and unlike most of you you guys aint pure
We should try other ways of preventing violence in the first place, maybe make self duplicating constructs that prevent violence.
i agree with this and im not a hero
nor do i want to be cuz
do i help people?sometimes its just that
being what most people wpuld call a hero isnt my style
the definition of a hero?
Someone who gets others killed.
I really appreciate this article, and I see whats going on, but if you really would give your life for someone then I applad you.
True heros are fools who put others in disadvantages while trying to look good. They all fall.
@ShadowWalker: Indeed, your partially right. There are those special people once in a generation, but I doubt any of us here qualify, though we might come close, we are yet so far.
i have nearly lost my life for other people before and it is a different feeling there aren't words to describe it
good article shade :)
i think everyone should aspire to become that selfless person like you described. i sure am. it's the most difficult path in life to take but it's also the most rewarding in my opinion.
anyone can give into hate and revenge. anyone can let their ego grow larger than themselves. the heroes are the ones who turn hate into love and revenge into forgiveness.
I would never give my life someone I didn't know. Just sayin, unless there is a war on and therfore I am fighting for freedom, I am not hero material. I would die to save some people yes. Of course the world is cruel. Basic human nature is to put yourself first, and screw everybody else. I have noticed on this site there are so many people who believe they are special, the chosen ones, and I wonder how quickly they will fall, chosen ones don't exist outside of movies and books
We are barely making our payments because there are 9 of us in 1 house. Yeah, the world is cruel. The brother I never got to meet died at 28 days. He would be 30 now. My grandma died months before I was born, and my grandpa is dying of colon cancer. My dog was abused before we got her, and my other dog we found on the side of the road in November 2009. My family and I have gone through tons of shit. I agree with you completely shade. The world is cruel.
I am alive and very smart. My dad married an ex-pornstar and chose her over my brothers and I. Humanity has no limit with its cruelty. I know the cruelness of the world. To me, the number 1 cruelty is abandonment. I wish to meet my biological parents so I can punch them in the face. We just barely got out of a 12,000 dollar court battle with my dad because I don't want to see him anymore (my parents got divorced, and he had visitation hours). Because of this court battle, I had to switch schools and move.
I have never dreamed of heroism. What people call pessimistic, I call realistic. Almost as soon as I was born, I was left under a train seat, naked, in Romania. They found me 3 days later and I was adopted 10 months later and brought here. I didn't walk until I was 1 and didn't make a noise until I was 2. I never cried, even when the acid from my pee left my butt raw because they wouldn't change my diaper at the orphanage. They thought I was going to die, then they thought I was retarded. I am neither.
this was all in memphis. i hate this place.
honestly even i, a fifteen year old don't believe in heroes. i've seen friends, other people, and even close family killed right in front of me. my older cousin was shot a few months ago because he was walking in the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time. so you're not the only one.
I really only want defense for myself. And for fun.
Sorry I meant to say dream after implausible
Great article, that should sober people up from thier implausible of being a hero.
Then what the heck was I doing? A cheap copy...
@Koori_shinobi: The shinobi as you call them still exist, but, just as times change, people change. The historical concept of them is wrong, they were never killers for hire. ever. The only killers for hire were cheap copies of the shinobi. I am well acquainted with a modern-day shinobi, and I model my life after that ancient tradition, and it has proven to be one I like, though t is not for everyone, I spend every second I am not here or doing school training, exercising, running myself into the ground. I know I will come through it stronger, though, and that is what we all want, isnt it? No, it is not, but it is my goal.
yeah i stopped dreaming of being a hero long ago
I'm still haunted by my past life. I was a ninja, hired to kill or incapacitate those who my "bosses" told me they needed gone. I watched my parents executed before my own eyes, and lived my life knowing I was silently doing the same to others...
@UMADBRO: Yes, that and some actually SEE what the hell they are getting into-like me. I used to dream of being a hero-not anymore, I have seen that, and the best I think I can be is someone who holds his own, and protects his family. The rest of the world can sort out it's own problems without my help.
Generally those with hero complexes are the first to die, because they lack tact and precision.
this is really intense, it is completely true as well. It must have been hard writing about your friend. You have helped support what i believed for a while, thank you.. bye the way i will try to send some positive energy
why would they delete it? its good information
Oh, I just had a thought. Moderators, please don't delete this because of it's content, I believe this needs to be said, before anyone does something stupid....
@aevong: I just hope that others can learn from me, instead of learning firsthand.
thank you. ive been saying this for a while to the guys saying they want to be a hero during the war.
@fgopl: You have no idea, I wrote this as a warning to those who would try this.
P.S. If anyone out there can spare it, I could use some positive energy right now, please...
If you are someone who reads comments before articles, then I will warn you away from reading this, as it includes some personal experiences that some here, especially the younger ones, may find disturbing.
