Ethereals and Taints: A more in-depth guide

In this article, I will be informing you of some of the Ethereal customs, including how you should behave and speak to any Ethereal you encounter, regardless of whether they are pure, hybrid or Taint. This is for your benefit, as poor communication and unacceptable behaviour can have serious consequences, especially if these inappropriate actions are made to a hybrid or Taint.

 

 

 

Communication: When speaking to Ethereals (specifically pure Ethereals), you have to understand one key aspect of their language: Almost every negative language that humans use is not recognised by Ethereals, and some words (words like murder, rape, assault, racism and prejudice) can cause offence to an Ethereal. The majority of Ethereal language is positive or pure. Anything bad is likely to cause confusion. However, the actions of Taints have forced Ethereals to add some if these negative words to their vocabulary, but uttering them except when absolutely necessary is strictly taboo. So, if for example you want to say that a relative was murdered, you would say that “Someone committed an impure action against [relative].” Since there are many actions that Ethereals consider impure, they will ask you to specify. But even so, it is best not to say murder. Instead say “Someone ended [relative's] life against [relative's] will”. Ethereals are also exceptional at reading body language, they can tell if you are lying. Dishonesty is considered an impure action to Ethereals, so keep that in mind when talking to them. If there is something that you do not wish to speak honestly about, simply say “I am not prepared to talk about [topic] at this point in time”. Learning these rules may prove extremely beneficial. However, these rules only apply to pure Ethereals, and you it is highly unlikely that you will encounter one. But in case you do, take note. Pure Ethereals aren't the only ones you have to follow certain guidelines for however.

 

Some hybrids know their identity, and follow the path of purity, so the above rules should be applied to them as well. However, these hybrids know about words like murder and rape, so they won't be offended to here them. It is however upsetting to them, so avoid those words where possible. Other hybrids (like Sigma) know that they are part Ethereal, but human influences and the media have led them to lead less than pure lives. Do not misunderstand however, they do understand the difference, and they are not yet tainted, so certain actions will offend them. These particular hybrids usually know little about their lineage and culture however, so are more likely to fall into a tainted lifestyle.

 

Taints (like myself) are very different though. No words are taboo to them, and as far as they are concerned, little or nothing is impure. Do not however assume that they cannot be offended. Lying to a Taint can have serious, even fatal consequences. Taints have a tendency to be more aggressive, particularly the hybrid Taints. They especially dislike authority figures (this harkens back to their exile/their ancestor's exile) too, so be careful how you talk to them. Any communication that sounds like an order, or speaking to them in a condescending tone, as though you think you are superior, will only lead to offence and violence. Avoid it at all costs. Talk to them as you would a grandparent or royalty: politeness, courtesy, pleases and thank-you's. The last thing you won't is an angry Taint.

 

But the one thing that insults all Ethereals more than anything else is speaking ill of their race and customs. That is probably the greatest of taboos. To them, it is like you are marking them all as tainted. The pure Ethereals and hybrids will take most offence to this as they hold their race and customs in the highest esteem. Taints will be less offended, but only fractionally. You would not think that however, due to the Taints' aggressive tendencies. They appear to take the most offence when actually they take the least.

 

 

 

Religion: You are quite lucky here actually. Ethereals have no real religion of their own, and are not offended by a person's religious views. The only thing Ethereals believe in is purity. Ethereals strive for purity, but also help others to achieve it, which in turn puts them a step closer to their goal of shedding all impurities. Do not confuse this with Hitler's “Supreme Race” however. Ethereals don't exterminate those they consider impure. Taints are exiled from the Ethereal Plane as a lesson, to see what true impurity is, in the hopes that they learn from their mistakes and strive to cleanse themselves, to atone for their actions.

 

 

 

Taints: As I have said, Taints are Ethereals that have been exiled from the Ethereal Plane. But why are they exiled? The answer is simple, impurity. When an Ethereal performs an impure action, they sully themselves. They become dirtied. The Ethereals exile them, and they become Taints. The Taints however miss the point of this punishment entirely, and rather than seeking redemption, they sully themselves even more. They see the impurities that surround them in the Physical Plane and they indulge themselves. They forget that it is possible to earn redemption, to earn return passage to the Ethereal Plane, assume that nothing they can do will make any difference anymore, and do all the things they never could before.

 

 

 

Language: I am still learning Ethereal language. I know a few words and phrases, but the main problem I have is translating them into English. But I'll give a few of the easiest ones:

 

Ren'us Parens'is Conum = To conceive a child

 

Sol'ee Gorystia = The sun rises on a Good day (this approximates as Good Morning)

 

Larin Yr Ephi Tissini = May Purity stay with you (A standard Ethereal farewell)

 

Ephi'yr-iyal = Wind with Purity

 

Mayrin Ephi = Welcoming Purity (A standard Ethereal greeting)
